Apple's Acquisition of AI Startup Silk Labs Demonstrates the Company's Philosophy of Privacy First

Apple’s Preference for Artificial Intelligence Powered Devices and Services That Respect Your Privacy

Apple’s Approach to AI: Privacy-First

According to a Tuesday report shared by The Information, Apple has quietly acquired privacy-focused AI startup, Silk Labs. While Silk Labs is a relatively small acquisition as the company’s round of prior funding had raised $4 million only and had 12 employees, the purchase demonstrates a growing divide between Apple and other tech giants hotly pursuing artificial intelligence growth.

While companies like Google focus on providing the most accessible AI services with the hope that providing ease of use will overcome privacy concerns, Apple takes the opposite approach, insisting upon privacy. From taking photos to asking Siri questions or getting directions, users can be confident using Apple’s platform that their data remains private and that Apple does not gather their personal information to sell to advertisers or other organizations.

The Sense smart-home assistant launched on Kickstarter was the first AI product of Silk Labs and ran completely on local user devices. While Sense was never brought to market, the product reflected the same privacy-focused philosophy that Apple has taken regarding the use of artificial intelligence.

Google Focuses on Scale and Ease of Use at the Cost of Privacy

On the other hand, Google’s recent AI acquisitions, Onward and Dialogflow, are cloud-based services that employ natural language processing to communicate with customers at scale. Scale and ease of use are the dominant factors affecting Google’s approach to AI to work with its existing business strategy.

To Share or Not to Share?

A 2017 study by Deloitte discovered that a majority of Americans are not comfortable sharing their browsing and social media activity with companies. Nonetheless, the number of Americans who are willing to do so has still doubled from 2014 to 2016.

How will consumers respond as the race for AI dominance continues? Will the decision be based on technology performance, ease of use and scalability? Will consumers be more concerned about their personal freedom and privacy? Perhaps then, the popularity of AI platforms in the future will be determined more by philosophy than technology. Apple seems to think so.

Talent Management: 9 Ways To Bring in Top Talent Through Excellent Experiences For Applicants

Elf

Having great talent working cohesively and productively at your company, big or small, is essential to growing your business, being profitable and making an impact. The people you hire can have a tremendous impact upon your business right from day one.

Depending upon your specific industry, top tier talent can be quite competitive to recruit and retain. Today almost every profession requires specific technical expertise.

An excellent experience during an interview can dramatically affect the decisions any candidate makes about working for your company. When you offer an excellent experience to viable candidates during interviews, you can create a lasting positive effect that compels a top tier candidate to accept your offer.

Here are some steps you can take to ensure this:

1. Provide training for your whole staff

Everyone in your company must be aware of the importance of interviews and creating a positive experience for new candidates. There are many impressions that a candidate will have about your company, from interactions starting with applications or outreach to final offers as well as personal interactions with receptionists, employees and hiring managers.

You can provide training to your team so that you are united in providing a consistent positive experience for your new candidates. This includes personalizing communications with individual candidates and ensuring that everyone conducting interviews is prepared, arrives on time and conducts interviews professionally and courteously.

Also pay attention to any feedback from candidates. For example, if a candidate has difficulty locating your office, make sure you provide clear directions before the next interview that you conduct. Even if you do not end up hiring your potential candidates, aim to create a positive experience that they would want to work for you if they could.

2. Have an organized process internally

In addition to human resources software you may use (link to BEPMS), you will also want to organize your own process for hiring. This means that you have clear goals for hiring and a team in place to help you with this. Even if you have a small startup with under 10 employees, you will still want to have a process in place so that you know how to respond to applicants.

3. Hold your hiring managers accountable

Hiring is very important for your company but a lot of the hard work in sourcing and hiring as well as real decision-making happens with your hiring managers. When you hold your hiring managers accountable and you place trust in them to help you find the right talent for your company, they are more inclined to do their jobs effectively with consideration. Motivating your hiring managers is also important. You can do this by telling them the positive impact of having a great candidate with real data and give them real-life examples of success.

4. Plan for enough time

Your hiring managers need time to review resumes, take notes and source candidates. The people you have designated to interview your candidates, must also have at least 30 minutes to meet with them individually.

5. Communicate frequently with your candidates

Communicate in a personalized way with your top level candidates. Insufficient communication is one of the primary reasons candidates can withdraw applications or move on to other companies. You can avoid this confusion and frustration by offering a clear process to your candidates and following through on it. Follow up does not have to be tedious - just a phone call or short email can be enough.

It is important that you do this with candidates also that you are not considering and follow up to explain that he or she has not been hired. Communicating in a timely manner is essential to create a good experience.

6. Provide an exceptional closing

When you have decided to hire a candidate, be sure to congratulate the individual, thank him or her for applying and personalize the job offer. Explain why this job and company are a great fit. You can invite the candidate to meet with your team in a relaxed setting (dinner or other) where the candidate can enjoy a social event without pressure.

Follow up with the right talent in a few days if you do not hear back instantly. Your top talent will be enthused to see how eager you are to have them.

7. Learn from your mistakes

Pay attention to any problems during the sourcing, interviewing and hiring process. What feedback did you receive from candidates and employees? How can you improve the hiring process?

8. Provide a positive on-boarding experience

Once you have decided to hire and  your candidate has accepted your offer, be sure to provide a positive on-boarding experience that maintains a high level of enthusiasm and optimism. This will drive participation and motivate your new talent to prove themselves at your company.

9. Have an employee retention plan

When you have hired great talent and you are seeing positive results, you will want to also have a plan in place to retain them. Employee retention is critical. Retaining top talent is also a priority at most companies as turnover rates can be high and finding the right candidates also time-consuming, difficult and expensive. Employees want to stay and work for a company that offers them opportunities to grow, professionally and in their own lives.

Profile: Stan Lee, Marvel Legend, Comic Book Writer and Creator of Beloved Superheroes

Few storytellers have inspired the imaginations of adults and children alike across the globe so vividly with such a lasting impression as Stan Lee.

In many ways, Stan Lee was considered a real-life hero to fans of his comic books and the movies inspired by them. When he passed away on November 12 of this year at 95, he left behind a legacy of stories with far-reaching influence across the globe. He was known for iconic characters such as Spider Man, Iron Man, Thor, X-Men, Black Panther, Incredibe Hulk, Daredevil, Fantastic Four and more.

Create characters that people can relate to.

Comic book writer and storyteller Stan Lee brought to life superheroes with flaws - men and women who had imperfections and problems that differed greatly from the ideal archetypes that were written for preteens. Lee had started early in the business, like Walt Disney, following his heart, to work in the creative industry writing stories.

For example, Peter Parker was an anxious teenage science student when a radioactive spider bites him, transforming him into the agile, super strong Spider Man. Despite his heroic acts where he changed the world for the better, Spider Man still struggled with his teenage problems with girls, being bullied and his own angst. He was flawed, lovable and heroic all at once - a complex, compelling and relatable character. While Batman was a superhero of epic proportions, Spider Man was a kid with real problems who was making things up as he went along, who inspired us but also invoked our sympathies. Peter Parker was truly a friendly, neighborhood Spider Man!

Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created. A superhero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain and to connect. The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart.
— Bob Iger, Disney CEO

Through his own work and collaborating with Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and others, Lee took Marvel from being a small independent venture to the No. 1 publisher of comic books in the world, and then, a multimedia company. In 2009, the Walt Disney Co. purchased Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. Some of the world’s biggest superhero films of all time, feature Marvel characters such as Avengers: Infinity War that raked in $2.05 billion worldwide and Black Panther that topped domestic superhero movies at $501 million in 2018, becoming the tenth highest grossing film in the United States.

I used to think what I did was not very important. People are building bridges and engaging in medical research, and here I was doing stories about fictional people who do extraordinary, crazy things and wear costumes. But I suppose I have come to realize that entertainment is not easily dismissed.

Offer Life Lessons in Memorable, Unique Ways

While many readers young and old alike, may never read French author Voltaire, Stan Lee etched Voltaire’s famous words permanently in the minds of comic book readers and fans of the Spider Man movie franchise worldwide. The famous phrase “With great power comes great responsibility” was perfectly illustrated in the stories of Spider Man, teaching readers self-discovery and responsibility.

Provide Individual Empowerment and Representation

Few franchise writers and storytellers have pushed forward the concept of equality and empowerment as vigorously and consistently as Stan Lee did in his Marvel series. His characters also evolved over time and provided powerful examples of freedom and individual achievement and prowess, which in turn, inspired people worldwide. This is most noticeable in the Black Panther series, particularly after the release of the new movie based on Stan Lee’s comics in 2018, that was very popular among the African American community, providing long-desired theatrical representation in an empowering way.

Stories like Stan Lee’s inspire children and adults to break free of limitations and stereotypes, to see themselves achieving and growing. They help demonstrate virtues and character traits such as strength, honesty, empathy, bravery and intelligence along with a love of integrity, justice and honor. These stories can also address real life issues that communities face or provide metaphors and examples to confront and deal with these issues head on.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

Lee wanted his character of Peter Parker to be imperfect, awkward at times and relatable. He chose to work with Steve Ditko to do this instead of Jack Kirby who was known for making perfect superheroes. Ditko had studied under Batman artist Jerry Robinson at the Cartoonist and Illustrators School in New York City. When Spider Man’s popularity catapulted Lee into the spotlight, he did not take all the credit for himself and shared it with his co-creator, Steve Ditko. He also publicly stated that he could not have truly envisioned the lovable, flawed, angst-filled teenage character of Peter Parker without the assistance of Ditko.

Stay Positive

Born on December 22, 1922 in Manhattan, New York, Stan Lee started working at a very young age, taking on odd jobs to help the family and meet the month’s rent. In later interviews after he had achieved success with his comics, Lee shared that his mother’s optimism and encouragement had a very positive influence on his life and perspective, enabling him to believe that he could do anything he wanted. This sunny perspective helped him throughout his career.

Lee would epitomize his optimistic attitude, positive energy and desire to constantly improve with the Latin word that he chose to describe his life and aspirations - Excelsior!

Excelsior would also become the title of his bestselling autobiography.

Don’t Take it All Too Seriously

Like the master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, Stan Lee liked to poke a little fun at himself and the movies inspired by his stories by appearing in cameos. His cameos range from avoiding falling concrete to watering his lawn, delivering the mail, crashing a wedding and more.

Astutely enough, in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Lee chats with Tobey Maguire's character, Peter Parker, on a street by Times Square. They read the news that the web-slinger will soon receive the key to the city.

You know, I guess one person can make a difference…’nuff said.
— Stan Lee to Peter Parker

Stan Lee spent his entire life creating memorable, lovable characters with real flaws, fears, anxieties and problems to overcome, that audiences could relate to and be inspired by. His legacy will continue on for generations to come.
