Apple Taps Indie Studio A24, Known for Oscar Winner 'Moonlight', 'Lady Bird' and 'Ex-Machina'

Multi-Year Agreement for Multiple Years

Apple has signed on independent studio A24 to produce films in a deal that is expected to be part of Apple's long-rumored video streaming service that may launch in 2019.

While few details of the deal have been shared publicly, Variety has proposed that the deal spans multiple films for multiple years. Whether these films will be available via streaming only or will also have a theater release are unknown. The financial terms of the agreement are unknown, but the partnership does not have an exclusivity agreement or ‘first-look agreement,’ meaning that studio A24 can remain independent and produce other content, meet existing deals in place with Direct TV and Amazon and act without restriction.

A24: Young and Pioneering

Compared to older established studios, A24 is new as it was founded in 2012. However, the independent studio has made a name for itself with numerous successes. In the last three years, A24 has released numerous films that garnered Oscar nominations and surprisingly, more box office successes, competing head to head with well known, large Hollywood film companies. While A24 does not specialize like Disney’s high budget, elaborate worldwide productions or intellectual films by other independent or smaller studios, it has established its own niche of prestigious films loved by audiences and critics alike.

A24 Is Raking in the Oscar Nominations

Moonlight won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2016. A surprising sleeper hit in 2017, Lady Bird won five Oscar nominations. Other acclaimed films include Ex Machina, The Disaster Artist, The Florida Project, It Comes at Night, The Witch and more in just the past three years alone. A24 has also partnered with major media companies for theatrical releases while remaining completely independent.

Apple Invests $1 Billion in Original Content and New Shows

For a while now, Apple has been rumored to be creating its own streaming video service, with the service expected to go live in 2019, using the Apple TV app and available in over 100 countries. Apple’s new service is expected to be family-friendly content. Several shows have already been lined up, including an untitled series based upon a morning show involving Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, Defending Jacob, a story featuring Chris Evans and a revival of Time Bandits, the popular 1980s fantasy film by Terry Gilliam.

The timing of the new agreement is interesting as large media consolidations are happening everywhere. AT&T got federal court approval to acquire Time Warner. Comcast attempted to win over 21st Century Fox with an all cash offer, but was bested by Disney who acquired Fox, becoming a 70 billion mega Hollywood company with a slew of known box-office hits. Streaming services will be competitive, as Disney now has its own Disney+ channel arriving in late 2019, as it severs its ties with Netflix and Amazon.

Microsoft Surpasses Apple as World's Most Valuable Company

With a market cap of $851 billion at the end of trading on Friday, Microsoft took back the crown, regaining a position it held eight years ago.

Microsoft is reaping the benefits of CEO Satya Nadella’s strategy to focus on its core profitable businesses, building out its existing strengths in enterprise and cloud computing via Azure, its platform that has accelerated in growth in the last three years. Azure is now second to Amazon Web Services in terms of market share.

At the same time, the tech giant accepted and cut its losses in the smartphone industry, ditching the Nokia mobile phone business that it had acquired under Steve Ballmer’s leadership in 2015. Nadella ended the business, letting go of 7,800 employees and a $7.6 billion charge three years ago and refocused Microsoft’s strategy around its best-selling services and products.

Apple also is facing challenges with the possibility of an American trade war with China that could lead to additional taxes and fees added to iPhones if President Trump’s threat to add a 10 percent tariff follows through.

While third-party sellers have sold Apple products before, they have varied greatly from Apple pricing and have not guaranteed sourcing or product quality. The new deal does guarantee product quality, with products sold directly from Apple and Apple-authorized retailers. Apple products will roll out on Amazon sites in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan and India over the next few weeks.

The deal includes the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPad Pro, Apple Watch Series 4 and Apple-owned Beats products, but not every Apple product. HomePod, that competes with Amazon’s own Echo, is noticeably absent.

“We’re working with Amazon to improve the experience for Apple customers on their site and we look forward to those customers having another great way to buy iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac and more.”
— Apple statement

Any seller currently on Amazon who sells Apple products will have listings taken down officially January 4th and will need to reapply to Apple directly to become an official Apple-authorized reseller before being allowed to sell Apple products again on Amazon.

“Amazon is constantly working to enhance the customer experience, and one of the ways we do this is by increasing selection of the products we know customers want. We look forward to expanding our assortment of Apple and Beats products globally.”
— Amazon spokesperson in official statement

Roughly 71 percent of Apple’s sales in fiscal 2018 that ended in September, came through indirect distribution channels like Amazon, reported Reuters. It is clear that Amazon is the dominant e-commerce distributor as previously Apple and Nike had both resisted selling on the platform but now acknowledge Amazon’s dominance and critical presence for reaching customers.
